Brighton have become notorious for their recruitment style under Tony Bloom’s ownership. One that sees them pick up exciting young talents to develop them before allowing European juggernauts to fight over their players or allow them to build a strong Seagulls squad.
Since qualifying for the Europa League in the 2023/24 campaign, more money has been spent by the club to track down even stronger talents in Europe, who can help the club become a European regular. Some have helped them on their quest, while others haven’t been as pivotal.
So, with that being said, here is a look at Brighton’s top five record signings.
5th – Mats Wieffer: £25.4 million in July 2024
Brighton expected to lose Moises Caicedo at some point during the summer. They already had Carlos Baleba but needed more depth, so they targeted Feyenoord’s midfielder.
Wieffer has struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances since arriving in England. Brighton have used him more often at right back, but they could target a specialist fullback this summer, which would likely push the Dutchman into more of a squad role next season.
Despite that, he remains part of a strong Brighton presence on the international stage. The Netherlands could feature one of the most influential Brighton groups at the World Cup, with Bart Verbruggen set to start in goal, Jan Paul van Hecke potentially partnering Virgil van Dijk in defence, and Wieffer adding depth and intensity in midfield.
4th – Joao Pedro: £27 million in May 2023
At the time, it was a record fee for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, which reached an FA Cup semi-final and booked a European place. The Brazilian was representing Watford in the Championship, where crucial for the Hornets, as he scored 11 goals.
He immediately became a starter, influencing attacking plays whether that was as a striker or a No 10, where in the 2024/25 campaign he got 16 Premier League goal contributions. He quickly gained interest from Chelsea, who shelled out £60 million for the forward, as he lights up Stamford Bridge.
3rd – Charalampos Kostoulas: £29.8m in June 2025
The Olympiakos forward joined the Amex Stadium last summer and could become the most expensive Greek player if the add ons are triggered. However, he has endured an unusual season for someone with such a high transfer fee.
Kostoulas has played just 17 Premier League games, and he has only twice played more than 45 minutes. In a season where Danny Welbeck is producing his best numbers, it’s been tough to get into Fabian Hurzeler’s team, but at just 18, there is more than enough time to turn things around.
2nd – Yankuba Minteh: £30 million in July 2024
After a year on loan at Feyenoord, where he would lift the Eredivisie title, many expected him to make a return to Newcastle and be a key player alongside the likes of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak. However, due to the Premier League Profit and Sustainability rule, he was available, and the Seagulls swept in.
While still showing signs of rawness, he is an electric winger who loves a battle with any fullback in the Premier League. His goalscoring numbers have recently been questioned, with Alan Smith highlighting that side of his game, but his overall performances have been excellent for Brighton. He is just missing that final edge to become one of the deadliest wingers in the league.
1st – Georginio Rutter: £40 million in August 2024
In the same summer they signed the Gambian international, they raised enough funds to get the signature of Leeds’ French forward, after their relegation to the Championship. A similar profile to that of Pedro, which makes it seem he joined a season too early.
His statistics don’t show his presence on the pitch. He is someone who can unlock a defence and is much more suited to sitting behind the striker. He has only scored eight times in the league, but his creative ability is something to behold.
