- Brighton secured Premier League survival in 2018
- Pascal Gross scored decisive goal vs Manchester United
- Result confirmed safety in first top-flight season
On May 4, 2018, Brighton & Hove Albion took a decisive step in their Premier League journey, securing survival with a 1–0 victory over Manchester United at the Amex Stadium.
It was a result that carried enormous significance. Brighton were in their first top-flight season since 1983 and had endured a difficult run leading into the game, failing to win in their previous seven matches. Yet, when it mattered most, Chris Hughton’s side delivered.
How Brighton Beat Manchester United
The game’s defining moment came through Pascal Gross. His header from Jose Izquierdo’s cross was cleared off the line by Marcos Rojo, but goal-line technology confirmed the ball had crossed, awarding Brighton a crucial lead. It proved to be the only goal of the match.

Brighton were the better side throughout. David de Gea was forced into strong saves to deny Glenn Murray and Izquierdo, while at the other end, Mathew Ryan produced a key stop to keep out Marcus Rashford. After taking the lead, Brighton showed maturity and discipline, managing the game effectively to see out the win.
The result moved them onto 40 points which was enough to guarantee survival and confirm their place in the Premier League for another season.
What Chris Hughton Said
Speaking after the match, Hughton emphasised the importance of the achievement, highlighting the challenges his side had overcome during their debut campaign. Survival, he said, meant everything.
Eight years on, that moment still stands as a defining chapter in Brighton’s modern history.
Pascal Gross, the man who scored the decisive goal, remains a central figure at the club in 2026. After leaving in August 2024 to join his boyhood club Borussia Dortmund, he returned to Brighton in January 2026. Since his return, he has made 18 appearances, contributing one goal and three assists, continuing his long-standing influence on the team.
Where Are They Now?
The victory over Manchester United also forms part of a wider trend at the Amex. Fixtures between the two sides have rarely lacked drama. Notably, Premier League meetings at the stadium have never ended in a draw.
The most recent clash at the Amex saw Brighton secure a 2–1 win in August 2024, courtesy of a 95th-minute winner from Joao Pedro. However, Manchester United did win at the end of the 2023/24 season, claiming a 2–0 victory.
The next meeting between the sides takes place on the final day of the Premier League season. With Brighton once again pushing towards a significant objective, the parallels with 2018 are clear. That night eight years ago was about survival. This time, it could be about Europe.
