Brighton Always Believed in Cashin’s Long Term Potential
Brighton did not spend around £9 million on Cashin in January 2025 without believing they were signing a player capable of developing into a Premier League defender.
The club handed him a long term contract until 2030 and viewed him as a project worth investing in. Those inside Brighton admired his blend of aggression composure and technical quality. He carried the traits of an old school defender but with the passing ability modern football demands.
When Brighton confirmed Cashin’s arrival former Derby Telegraph writer Leigh Curtis offered a glowing assessment of the defender’s attributes.
“He is a fierce competitor who is never fazed by any challenge or player in front of him. While he may be only 23 there is a touch of the old school defender about him.”
Curtis also highlighted the technical side of Cashin’s game which has become increasingly obvious during his Blackburn spell.
“Cashin rattles into the tackles he reads the game well and after initially being developed as a midfielder he’s an excellent passer of the ball.”
That balance between aggression and composure is exactly what Brighton saw in him.
What Cashin needed most was experience.
That explains why this spell at Blackburn feels so important to his development. Under O’Neill he has found a system that allows his strengths to flourish. Cashin has looked calm in possession strong in the tackle and increasingly confident leading the defensive line.
There is also a maturity to his game that has become more obvious in recent weeks.
He may not possess explosive recovery pace but his positional awareness and timing consistently help him stay one step ahead. Those qualities made him such a popular figure at Derby County and they are now beginning to stand out once again at Championship level.

Eiran Cashin’s Blackburn Resurgence Could Force a Rethink at Brighton
Brighton’s defensive situation this summer will play a huge role in determining what comes next.
Lewis Dunk remains an important figure while Igor Julio and expected arrival Olivier Boscagli add quality and depth. If Jan Paul van Hecke remains at the club opportunities could still be difficult to guarantee for Cashin next season.
Yet there is now a genuine case for giving him a closer look during pre season.
Cashin no longer feels like a distant development project. His performances at Blackburn suggest he is moving towards genuine first team consideration and Brighton’s coaching staff will surely take notice of the progress he has made since January.
Brighton sporting director Jason Ayto hinted at the importance of regular football when Cashin’s Blackburn loan was confirmed earlier this year.
“Eiran has not had the opportunities we would have liked at Birmingham and we feel this switch will give him the chance to play more regularly.”
That decision now appears to be paying off.
There is also an argument that another Championship loan may no longer provide the same level of challenge.
Blackburn would reportedly love to bring him back and there will likely be other clubs monitoring the situation as well. But Brighton now face an interesting balancing act. Push Cashin into the squad too early and risk stalling his development or keep him away from the first team when he may already be capable of contributing.
Brighton Fans Have Every Reason to Be Excited
Brighton’s recruitment model has always relied on patience and smart development.
Not every player arrives ready made for Premier League football and Cashin’s journey has reflected that. His difficult spell at Birmingham may yet prove an important learning experience while Blackburn has offered the perfect environment to rebuild confidence and consistency.
Curtis perhaps summed up the feeling around Cashin best when discussing the defender’s long term potential after his Brighton move.
“He is a terrific talent that has the ability to go very far.”
Now there is a growing feeling that the defender is edging closer to the breakthrough many expected when he first arrived from Derby.
Perhaps another year of regular football would still benefit him. That remains a realistic possibility given Brighton’s strength in depth and ambitions at the top end of the Premier League.
But after Eiran Cashin’s Blackburn resurgence there is finally a sense that Brighton may soon have a serious decision to make.
