Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler insists Georginio Rutter remains committed to the club despite a difficult campaign ahead of Sunday’s emotional return to Leeds United.
The French forward heads back to Elland Road having struggled to establish himself as a regular starter this season. Rutter has scored three Premier League goals and has started only once in Brighton’s last seven league outings.
After joining Brighton from Leeds in a club record £40-million move in 2024 expectations were high following an encouraging debut season on the south coast. However competition for attacking places has intensified with Danny Welbeck leading the line and Jack Hinshelwood impressing in an advanced midfield role.
Hurzeler admits Rutter frustration
Speaking ahead of the Premier League clash Hurzeler admitted Rutter is disappointed with his current situation but praised the striker’s attitude and professionalism.
“I feel that he’s in a good place. Of course he’s not happy with his game and that’s normal,” Hurzeler told reporters ahead of Brighton’s trip to Leeds. But I feel that he’s there for the team-mates and that he’s there for the club and that’s the most important thing. Everyone has to put their ego behind the success of the club.”
Hurzeler stressed the importance of unity within his squad and said players must always prioritise the collective over personal frustrations.
“That’s what I always emphasise. It’s team-first and there are some moments where you have to put your ego behind,” he said.

Maxim De Cuyper highlighted as squad example
The Brighton head coach also pointed to Maxim De Cuyper as an example of the mentality he wants throughout the squad after the Belgian defender patiently waited for his chance earlier in the season.
“Maxim is a great example. He’s a big player and he played several games for Belgium but he didn’t play many minutes for us because other players were doing well. Now we missed Mats Wieffer in recent weeks and Maxim replaced him in a very impressive way.”

Brighton boss backs Rutter before Elland Road return
Hurzeler believes commitment behind the scenes is what allows players to seize opportunities when they arrive.
“You can only do this if you train hard every day and if you put the ego behind while emphasising togetherness. Regarding Georginio he’s in a good place. I know he’s not happy about his game-minutes but he’s 100 per cent committed and wants to make the best impact he can for the team.”
Sunday’s return to Elland Road now offers Rutter the chance to remind both Brighton and Leeds supporters of the quality that made him one of the Seagulls’ biggest-ever signings.
