- Jack Hinshelwood praised after scoring in three straight games
- Danny Welbeck highlighted as a key leader in European push
Fabian Hurzeler offered an insight into the standards driving Brighton’s late-season push for Europe when he faced the media ahead of Sunday’s trip to Leeds United.
With two games left and European qualification still firmly in reach, the Albion head coach spoke about the intensity he demands from his side, the rise of Jack Hinshelwood in a new attacking role, and why senior figures like Danny Welbeck continue to set the standard at a crucial point in the campaign.
Hurzeler demands Brighton intensity
After Brighton scored inside 35 seconds against Wolves in their last outing, Hurzeler said the fast starts are no coincidence.
“Intensity should always be our identity, so we always want to have it on the pitch. We always want to start well. It’s nice to have a good start, get a good feeling, get the fans behind you, and dominate the opponent.”
Hurzeler’s words captured the style Brighton have developed under him this season. His side have become increasingly direct and aggressive, looking to dominate games through pressing, quick transitions and winning the ball high up the pitch.
Why Hinshelwood and Welbeck are thriving
Hinshelwood has now scored in three consecutive Premier League games, and Hurzeler believes his versatility is one of his biggest strengths.
“He always shows great effort in training. He wants to be part of the team, improve, adjust, and learn. One of his biggest strengths is his flexibility; he can play in several positions. Now he is in a number 10 position, and it seems to be a good fit.”
The Brighton head coach also pointed to Hinshelwood’s attacking instinct, saying the midfielder has a real desire to get into the penalty area and score, something that has added another dimension to Brighton’s attack during the run-in.
Welbeck could make his 200th appearance for Brighton this weekend, and Hurzeler praised the striker’s leadership as much as his form in front of goal. Welbeck is enjoying the most prolific top-flight campaign of his career.
Hurzeler said: “Very impressed. Throughout the whole season, he was always a main topic for the media. It shows he gets a lot of rewards for his performances and for being a leader on and off the pitch.”

Brighton focused only on Leeds
With Brighton still in contention for European qualification, Hurzeler was asked whether the excitement around the Champions League race is beginning to build.
Instead, he stressed that the immediate challenge at Elland Road is all that matters.
“I feel the biggest excitement going to a special stadium with a special atmosphere, facing a strong opponent, and preparing my team the best we can. The Leeds match is the most important game for us now.”
Hurzeler also reserved praise for Daniel Farke, whose side have secured Premier League safety and are unbeaten since March.
“I still have a lot of praise for him. He has done an unbelievable job at Leeds, and I’m really happy for him,” said Hurzeler.
The Brighton boss expects a difficult test against a side that have adapted well in recent weeks, but his message remained consistent. Brighton will go to Elland Road looking to impose their own game and maintain the high standards that have kept their European hopes alive heading into the final two matches.
