  • Gross has created 39 chances since returning in January
  • Only Yankuba Minteh has more Brighton chance creation this season
  • German midfielder was standout in Leeds defeat despite loss

When Brighton & Hove Albion brought Pascal Gross back in January, it looked like an emotional reunion with a club legend. Four months on, it is increasingly clear his return has been far more than sentiment. It has helped transform Brighton’s attacking output at the most important stage of the season.

Brighton’s 1-0 defeat away to Leeds United on Sunday was a major blow to their European hopes, but Gross’ display at Elland Road underlined exactly why his influence has become so significant. While many around him struggled to break through Leeds’ compact shape, the 34-year-old dictated possession, created openings and looked the one player capable of turning control into a winning goal.

That has been a familiar theme since his mid-season return.

Gross dictating Brighton’s attack again

Brighton’s first season without Gross exposed how much they had relied on his creativity during his first spell on the south coast. In his final campaign before leaving for Borussia Dortmund in 2024, the German created 103 chances in all competitions.

The drop-off after his departure was stark. In the 2024/25 Premier League season, Brighton’s highest chance creator was Kaoru Mitoma with just 37.

The Seagulls still had possession-heavy spells under Fabian Hurzeler, but too often lacked the final pass to break teams down consistently.

That absence of a reliable creator was particularly noticeable against deep defensive blocks, where Brighton frequently controlled matches without turning that dominance into enough clear-cut opportunities.

January return lifts Brighton creativity

Since rejoining Brighton in the winter window, Gross has created 39 chances in the Premier League despite only arriving halfway through the season. Only Yankuba Minteh has created more for the club this campaign with 43 but he has had the benefit of a full season.

That statistic alone highlights Gross’ immediate impact.

He has also produced five big chances and 40 successful crosses since January, numbers that place him among the league’s most effective midfield creators. More importantly, his return has coincided with Brighton’s surge back into European contention.

Creativity key for European push

At Elland Road, Brighton had 66 per cent possession, registered 19 shots and generated an xG above 3.0, yet still lost to a stoppage-time goal. Despite the frustration, Gross was the standout performer.

He tested Karl Darlow twice from distance in the first half, delivered dangerous set-pieces and was at the heart of nearly every promising Brighton attack. His late free-kick created another clear opportunity for Charalampos Kostoulas, but the forward headed straight at the goalkeeper.

After the match, Gross summed up the mood.

He said: “It’s very painful, very frustrated because I thought in the second half we played very well. We created enough opportunities to win the game by ourselves, a lot of chances where we couldn’t get the lead.

“In the end, to lose it like that is really sore. Today, we had the chance to take it and we didn’t do it. That is the disappointing thing. That is the frustration”, Gross added

Brighton’s signing of the season?

For a player who only returned in January, Gross is already making a compelling case as Brighton’s most influential signing of the season.

His experience has brought calm in possession, but just as importantly, his vision has restored the attacking sharpness Brighton lost when he initially departed. The numbers show it, and so do the performances.

As Brighton head into their final game of the season against Manchester United needing a result to secure European football, Gross’ creativity may again be their best hope.
