Rather than placing him straight into the Premier League, Brighton arranged a season long loan move to Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise to accelerate his development.

The loan spell that shaped Mitoma’s rise
After representing Japan at the Tokyo Olympics, Mitoma headed to Belgium and adapted rapidly to the demands of European football. He made 29 appearances for Union SG in all competitions, scoring eight goals and producing four assists.
The winger’s direct running, close control and sharp movement immediately stood out. It became clear that Brighton had uncovered another gem.
Mitoma also made his senior debut for Japan in November 2021, further increasing excitement around his long term future at Albion.
Brighton fans quickly fell in love with Mitoma

Across all competitions he contributed 10 goals and eight assists in 41 appearances as Brighton continued their remarkable climb under the spotlight.
What makes Mitoma especially unique is the intelligence behind his game. During his university studies in Japan he famously wrote a thesis on dribbling mechanics, using cameras to analyse movement, balance and reactions during one on one situations.

Injuries, contract extension and moments of magic
The 2023/24 season was disrupted by injuries, limiting Mitoma’s rhythm at times, but he still delivered three goals and four assists in 19 Premier League appearances.
Brighton rewarded his importance to the squad by handing him a new contract in October 2023 which runs until June 2027.
Even during difficult periods, Mitoma continued producing unforgettable moments.
His sensational solo goal against Wolves in August 2023 won the Premier League Goal of the Month award, while another stunning strike against Chelsea earned the same honour in February 2025.
That campaign also saw him hit double figures in the Premier League for the first time with 10 goals.
