Bart Verbruggen’s difficult afternoon at Elland Road has sparked fresh criticism with former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer claiming the Brighton stopper made the wrong call in the decisive moment of Albion’s defeat.
The Dutch international came racing from his area late in the match after Jan Paul van Hecke underhit a back pass under pressure. With Lewis Dunk attempting to recover the situation, Dominic Calvert Lewin reached the loose ball first before calmly rounding Verbruggen and finishing into an empty net.
It was a costly moment in a painful defeat for Brighton and one that immediately drew scrutiny from pundits analysing the game.
Schwarzer questions Verbruggen decision making
Schwarzer felt Verbruggen’s aggressive decision to leave his line ultimately played into Calvert Lewin’s hands despite acknowledging the difficulty of making split second choices under pressure.
Speaking to BBC TV’s Match Of The Day, Schwarzer said:
“Van Hecke’s ball was a poor ball. Verbruggen has to make a decision, a split second decision. Dunk is there and he makes the wrong one.
“It is easy to say it afterwards, of course, but the right decision would have been to drop back deeper on his line. By making the decision, Dominic Calvert Lewin knows, ‘All I have got to do is beat him to the ball, take a touch around him and I have got an open goal’. And that is exactly what he does.”
The criticism arrives during a period where Verbruggen’s performances are under even greater focus because of growing transfer speculation ahead of the summer window.
Newcastle interest grows after recent mistakes
Newcastle United are among the clubs strongly linked with the Brighton goalkeeper with reports suggesting Eddie Howe’s side view the 23 year old as a long term solution between the posts.
Verbruggen remains highly regarded across Europe because of his calmness in possession, sweeping ability and composure under pressure. His profile fits perfectly into Brighton’s modern style under Fabian Hurzeler and there is still a widespread belief that he could develop into one of the Premier League’s elite goalkeepers.
However a couple of costly moments in recent weeks have slightly changed the tone surrounding him.
A high profile mistake against Newcastle earlier this month alongside the error at Leeds have fuelled fresh debate around his consistency at the top level and intensified discussion around whether Brighton could cash in if a major bid arrives.

Pundit tears into Bart Verbruggen as Brighton weigh transfer future
Brighton have built a reputation for making ruthless but calculated transfer decisions when player values peak and a reported £50 million offer for Verbruggen would present another major test of that strategy.
Despite recent criticism there is little doubt inside football that Verbruggen’s ceiling remains extremely high. Goalkeepers often develop later than outfield players and Brighton are unlikely to lose faith in a player still viewed as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
Yet with transfer talk growing louder and every mistake attracting heavier scrutiny the spotlight around Verbruggen is becoming impossible to ignore heading into a crucial summer for both player and club.
