  • The Dutch defender became a fan favourite after loan spells at Blackburn and Heerenveen
  • Van Hecke’s aggressive style and passing ability transformed Albion’s back line

Jan Paul van Hecke arrived at Brighton in 2020 as a talented but largely unknown defender from NAC Breda. Five years later he looks every inch the modern Premier League centre-back Albion supporters hoped he would become.

Aggressive in the tackle, calm in possession and fearless under pressure, the Dutchman has grown into one of the club’s most important players. His journey from developmental loan signing to fan favourite has been built on resilience, personality and relentless improvement.

Brighton saw potential before everyone else

When Brighton signed van Hecke in September 2020, the move slipped under the radar outside the Netherlands. Albion quickly sent him back out on loan to Heerenveen where he gained valuable Eredivisie experience across 28 appearances.

Another loan followed the next season at Blackburn Rovers and that proved to be a turning point.

Van Hecke adapted brilliantly to the demands of English football and became a standout figure in Blackburn’s push for the play-offs. His performances were so impressive that he became the first loan player in the club’s history to win their Player of the Season award.

That campaign hardened him. It gave him edge, confidence and belief.

His breakthrough at Brighton changed everything

Van Hecke made his Premier League debut in a 1-0 win over Leeds United in August 2022 before earning his first top-flight start in a 2-2 draw at Leicester City.

The raw qualities were immediately obvious.

There was aggression in the way he attacked duels and composure in the way he carried the ball out from defence. Even in limited appearances during the 2022/23 season he looked capable of thriving at the highest level.

One performance in particular caught the eye.

Against Manchester City in May 2023, van Hecke produced a hugely impressive display against Erling Haaland in a 1-1 draw at the Amex. Few defenders managed to unsettle the Norwegian striker that season but the Brighton defender competed with him physically and mentally throughout the night.

It felt like a glimpse of the future.

Van Hecke player profile: A standout in modern football

The 2024/25 season cemented van Hecke’s status as one of Brighton’s key men.

At the centre of Albion’s defence he combined crunching tackles with intelligent positioning and progressive passing. His ability to step into midfield and break opposition lines became a major weapon in Brighton’s build-up play.

Modern football demands more from centre-backs than simply defending the box and van Hecke embodies that evolution perfectly.

Standing at 1.89 m (6 ft 2 in), he dominates aerially while also possessing the technical quality of a deep-lying playmaker. He is proactive rather than reactive. He presses high, anticipates danger early and plays with a confidence that suits Brighton’s expansive style.

Those qualities earned him both the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards after a superb campaign.

International recognition arrived for the Dutch defender

Van Hecke’s rise at club level soon caught the attention of the Netherlands national team.

After making his Under-21 debut in 2022, he received his first senior call-up in September 2024 and made his debut as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw against Germany.

For Brighton supporters it felt like another milestone in a remarkable development story.

Albion have built a reputation for identifying talent before it explodes onto the European stage and van Hecke may be one of the clearest examples yet.

Why Brighton fans connect with van Hecke

Supporters tend to gravitate towards players who reflect the spirit of the club and van Hecke fits that mould perfectly.

He plays with emotion. He takes responsibility in difficult moments. He never hides from possession and never shies away from a battle. Even when mistakes happen there is usually a sense that they come from bravery rather than hesitation.

That mentality has made him more than just an important defender.

It has made him one of the faces of Brighton’s modern era.
