- Danny Welbeck omitted from England’s 2026 World Cup squad
- Thomas Tuchel selects 26-man group for tournament in North America
- Brighton striker misses out despite 13-goal Premier League season
Danny Welbeck has been left out of England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Thomas Tuchel opting for other attacking options despite the Brighton & Hove Albion forward enjoying his most productive Premier League season.
The squad was officially revealed in a live broadcast from Wembley Stadium, with captain Harry Kane leading the group heading to the United States, Canada and Mexico. While several experienced names made the cut, Welbeck’s absence is one of the most notable omissions from the final selection.
Welbeck left out despite strong Brighton season
The Brighton striker has scored 13 Premier League goals this season, his highest-ever tally in the competition, and has played a key role in Fabian Hurzeler’s side as they push for European qualification. However, it has not been enough to earn a place in Tuchel’s tournament plans.
Welbeck’s camp had reportedly been pessimistic in the build-up, with the 35-year-old included only in provisional long-list discussions and no direct contact from the England setup beyond that stage.
Tuchel has instead prioritised other forward options, with Ollie Watkins included after strong recent form and Ivan Toney also selected following a prolific season in Saudi Arabia, where he has scored 32 goals and provided seven assists. The competition for places in the attacking unit ultimately proved decisive.

End of an international return for Welbeck
Welbeck’s omission comes despite a strong campaign at club level, where he has not only scored regularly but also contributed to Brighton’s overall attacking structure under Hurzeler. His pressing, movement and link-up play have been central to their system throughout the season.
It also marks the end of a potential international return, with Welbeck set to remain on 42 England caps, the last of which came in 2018. Despite being one of the most experienced forwards available, he will not feature at a third major tournament.
Despite his strong club form and leadership role at the Amex, the veteran forward will not be part of England’s World Cup campaign this summer, bringing an end to hopes of a late international tournament return.
