Brighton appear to be stepping up plans to strengthen at right-back with Olympiacos defender Costinha emerging as a serious summer target.

Reports from Greece suggest the Seagulls are weighing up a move for the Portugal under-21 international as uncertainty continues to surround several members of Fabian Hurzeler’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Costinha has built a growing reputation in Piraeus thanks to his disciplined defending and willingness to break forward when the opportunity arises. The 24-year-old has become an important figure for Olympiacos and is now attracting growing Premier League interest.

Sources in Greece claim representatives connected to the player were in the Brighton area this week while talks over potential offers continue behind the scenes.

A move to the Amex Stadium would see Costinha follow a familiar route from Olympiacos to the south coast after Charalampos Kostoulas completed his own switch last summer.

Brighton supporters will no doubt welcome the club’s continued ambition in the transfer market as Hurzeler shapes the squad in his own image.

Defensive changes expected this summer

Brighton’s interest arrives at a key moment for the club’s defensive planning. Veteran full-back Joel Veltman is approaching the end of his contract and there remains uncertainty over whether he will stay beyond the current season.

Much of Brighton’s campaign has seen Mats Wieffer deployed in the right-back role with Hurzeler praising the Dutchman’s versatility and intelligence on the ball. Even so the Seagulls remain keen to add a recognised specialist in the position.

Costinha could fit that profile perfectly. The former Rio Ave defender offers reliability at the back while also providing a dangerous attacking outlet down the flank. Olympiacos reportedly value him at around £10 million.

Brighton eye £10m Olympiacos star amid squad rebuild

Brighton are expected to oversee significant squad changes this summer following the final game of the season against Manchester United.

Long-serving defender Adam Webster looks set to leave while James Milner and Solly March are both nearing the end of their current deals. Igor Julio could also move on with a return to Brazil emerging as a possible destination.

Against that backdrop the potential arrival of Costinha would represent another bold and forward-thinking move from Albion’s recruitment team as the club looks to build a squad capable of pushing even higher under Hurzeler.
