- Brighton reject Cruzeiro bid for Igor Julio after opening talks
- Cruzeiro remain confident of completing summer transfer
- Igor Julio reportedly keen on return to Brazilian football
Brighton have rejected an opening bid from Cruzeiro for defender Igor Julio as negotiations over a potential summer transfer continue to intensify.
The Premier League club turned down the Brazilian side’s first proposal during initial discussions but the setback has done little to cool optimism in Belo Horizonte. Cruzeiro remain determined to land the 28 year old and are already preparing an improved offer.
Cruzeiro ready to return with improved offer
Reports in Brazil suggest Cruzeiro will meet Brighton again later this week as they attempt to move talks forward and edge closer to an agreement.
The club view Igor Julio as their top defensive target ahead of the next transfer window and sources close to the negotiations believe discussions are entering a decisive phase.
Despite Brighton’s resistance there is growing confidence within Cruzeiro that the deal remains achievable.

Igor Julio already aligned with the project
One of the most significant developments is the player’s apparent willingness to make the switch.
According to reports in Brazil Cruzeiro and Igor Julio have already reached an initial agreement over salary and contract terms which leaves Brighton as the main obstacle standing in the way of the transfer.
The defender is also understood to be enthusiastic about the move despite attracting interest from clubs elsewhere in Europe. Cruzeiro’s ambitious project and the chance to return home appear to have made a strong impression.
Brighton reject Cruzeiro bid but talks continue
While Brighton have rejected the first approach there is little indication the negotiations are close to collapsing.
Instead the rejection is being viewed as part of the expected bargaining process with Cruzeiro now preparing to increase their offer in the coming days.
The Seagulls are believed to value Igor Julio higher than Cruzeiro’s opening proposal and will wait to see whether the Brazilian club can close the gap financially.
Cruzeiro already planning for Igor Julio arrival
Behind the scenes Cruzeiro are acting with the confidence of a club that believes the transfer could soon become reality.
Members of Artur Jorge’s coaching staff have reportedly spent weeks analysing Igor Julio’s recent Brighton performances along with footage from his earlier years in English football.
That level of preparation is often seen in Brazil as a clear sign that negotiations are serious and progressing positively.

Difficult season leaves future uncertain
Igor Julio endured a frustrating campaign in England after struggling for regular football.
A loan spell at West Ham produced only four appearances before he returned to Brighton where opportunities remained limited.
Now attention turns to Cruzeiro’s next move and whether Brighton’s current stance is simply the opening chapter in negotiations that could eventually lead to a summer agreement.
